Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan announced that it is going to cut 1,000 jobs and seek a premium increase for its individual plans.

According to an article in the Detroit Free Press, the Blues plan cited a loss in revenue due to fewer subscribers as firms lay off employees, coupled with an influx of new subscribers rejected by for-profit insurers.

A Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan spokesman said the cuts are “the direct and predictable results of a regulatory system that no longer works.” He added, “Until policymakers reform Michigan’s broken individual health market, Blue Cross will do what is necessary as a private business to preserve our financial stability.”

In the face of Aetna and Cigna, among others, who are cutting workforces, it remains to be seen which — and when — other Blues plans will follow suit.
