Could health insurance be safe from a major federal overhaul in 2009?

One prominent House leader – who has serious “street cred” in all matters budget and otherwise – said this weekend that he doubts Congress or President Obama will be able to complete an overhaul of the U.S. health care and insurance industry this year.

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) said during an interview on C-SPAN TV (yes, count me among those who actually tune in via TV and radio occasionally!) that he doubts a comprehensive plan could pass Congress, but believes an incremental approach is the way to go.

According to The Hillnewspaper, Clyburn said that addingnew programs to initiatives such as SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program) seems more feasible.

A group that represents doctors and their interests, and wants a reform of medical malpractice laws, said that reform could mean fewer unnecessary procedures, tort reform, and lower malpractice insurance rates, according to an article on LegalNewsline.com.
