Something more golden than Oscar for Heath Ledger’s daughter

Something more than a Golden Globe or potentially even an Oscar may be awarded to the young daughter of the late Heath Ledger.

According to the Associated Press, an agreement has been reached in a suit involving the actor’s $10 million life insurance policy.

A little over a year ago, Ledger died in a New York apartment from what was deemed an accidental prescription drug overdose.  A few months later, an attorney for Ledger sued ReliaStar Life Insurance Co. as they allegedly refused to pay out the claim, seeking an investigation into whether the “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Dark Knight” actor’s death was a suicide.

The AP reports that a filing on the agreement seeks to establish a guardian to represent Ledger’s 3-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose, the policy’s beneficiary with a closed hearing set for next month.

By that time, we will know whether Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker in the 2008 Batman blockbuster has netted him an Oscar.  So far the role has earned Ledger a number of posthumous honors, including Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards.

While accolades are indeed something to be cherished by Ledger’s family, I’m sure they would appreciate financial security for Matilda Rose much more.
