Former New Jersey councilman convicted of steering business to insurance brokerages
A former Passaic, N.J. councilman has been convicted on federal extortion charges following an FBI sting that found 13 state politicians accepted bribes for government contracts, including those for insurance.
Jonathan Soto, 33, was found guilty on 23 counts in U.S. District Court in Trenton after accepting $44,500 in bribes for himself and other city officials, according to the Star Ledger.
Payments came from undercover agents, posing as businessmen offering bribes to obtain public contracts for insurance brokerage and roofing services.
Others charged in the sting included former Orange Mayor Mims Hackett and former Passaic Mayor Samuel Rivera, the report said
Soto was found guilty of bribery, extortion and attempted drug possession and faces up to 30 years in federal prison, when he is sentenced June 5.
