Former New Jersey cop sentenced for insurance fraud

A former Camden, N.J., police officer has received one year of probation for defrauding a state insurer by falsifying application and renewal forms for auto insurance policies.

Darryl Miller, 42, of Sicklerville, N. J., was required to forfeit his job and is permanently barred from public employment in New Jersey, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

Miller pleaded guilty Jan. 30 to insurance fraud, admitting that between Dec. 1, 2002, and Dec. 31, 2005, he defrauded New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Co.

In addition to his police position, Miller also was the co-owner and operator of MJ Transportation Company, a non-emergency medical transportation business transporting patients from their homes to doctor’s offices and for other testing and treatments.

Miller illegally obtained required insurance on four MJ Transportation vans at a substantially lower cost by falsely claiming the vans were not being used in a commercial enterprise, according to the attorney general’s office.

Vehicle registration forms filed with the Motor Vehicle Commission falsely indicated the vans were only used for personal transportation. As a result of the fraud, Miller saved approximately $9,000 per vehicle annually.

In 2004, one of the vans was involved in a fatal accident and due to Miller’s actions, the victim’s family was denied compensation, because the van was not property insured. The matter is currently in litigation.

Charges against the other co-owner of MJ Transportation, Fred Jefferson, were dismissed.

“It is particularly disturbing when a police officer participates in an insurance fraud scheme,” said Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Greta Gooden Brown in a statement. “Rather than upholding the law, as he was sworn to do, this officer broke the law, putting others at risk.”
