A couple from the Hawaiian island Kauai was sentenced to jail for insurance fraud and theft of more than $6,000 from GEICO Casualty.
In May 2006, Clifford Cabinatan intentionally damaged his vehicle during a domestic dispute that witnesses and a police report confirm, according to the Hawaii Insurance Division.
However, Cabinatan and his wife, Kelly Teves-Cabinatan, called the Kauai Police Department and instead reported vandalism to their vehicle and GEICO Casualty making the same claim.
Clifford Cabinatan and his wife both pleaded guilty to one count of theft in the second degree and one count of insurance fraud. He was sentenced to one year in jail and she received a 60-day jail sentence.
The couple must also serve five years probation, 500 hours of community service and restitution to GEICO.
