New Jersey woman sentenced for cheating ex-husband’s insurer
A Gloucester County, N.J., woman was sentenced to five years of probation after cheating her ex-husband’s health insurance company out of more than $13,000.
Catherine Gassler, 54, of Monroeville, must also pay $13,460 in restitution to Oxford Health Plans and a $2,500 civil fine, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.
Gassler previously pleaded guilty to a criminal accusation that charged theft by deception and tampering with records, according to Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Greta Gooden Brown.
Through the guilty plea, Gassler admitted that between Dec. 12, 2006, and Aug. 5, 2008, she received $13,460 from Oxford, her ex-husband’s health insurer, even though they were divorced and she was no longer entitled to benefits. She also admitted to providing false information on a coordination of benefits form in order to continue receiving benefits, according to the attorney general’s office.
“Far too commonly, people intentionally misrepresent their marital status in order to obtain health insurance benefits,” Brown said in a statement. “Citizens should realize that not only will benefits be denied if they misrepresent their marital status, but they can be charged with a crime.”
