A Bahama, N.C., insurance agent is accused of stealing the identities of more than 100 people, some of whom were deceased, and signing them up for Medicare Advantage plans to collect commissions of more than $7,000 for the false applications.

Melissa Swain Parrish, 36, was arrested on charges of identity theft and obtaining property by false pretense and surrendered her agent’s license, according to the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

Parrish was a contract agent with Miracle Insurance Co. of Raleigh, N.C.

Investigators with the department learned of the alleged scheme when one of the victims contacted the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, which passed the matter on to the department’s Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, or SHIIP.

SHIIP provides unbiased information about Medicare and related insurance products to recipients or caregivers and is currently working to identify and assist victims targeted by the alleged scam, according to the department.
