Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co., the first property-casualty insurance firm to offer green insurance in the U.S., is bringing a product to New York.
The first-ever admitted green insurance available in homeowners in New York, according to the company, Fireman’s Fund is offering the product to those who currently own green homes or who want to upgrade their residences with green features following a loss using environmental safety and efficiency standards.
If a home is completely destroyed, it can be rebuilt to green standards, certified as having Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design status.
“We believe this is a trend-setting insurance solution for homeowners who are interested in the many benefits of ‘going green’ at home,” said Donald Soss, vice president of Fireman’s Fund Personal Insurance, in a statement.
A 5% discount on the coverage, applied to the premium, is available to homeowners whose residences are already green.
With the new coverage, homeowners will be able to rebuild and replace with green alternatives including Energy Star-rated appliances, Forest Stewardship Council certified wood for ceilings, siding and framing, water-saving plumbing fixtures and replacement of ozone-depleting refrigerants and fire extinguishing agents with environmentally friendly alternatives.
The product is approved in 35 states, including the District of Columbia, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
In 2006, Fireman’s Fund became the first property-casualty firm to offer green insurance to the U.S. commercial marketplace, offering financial incentive for green building owners and the company’s commercial insurance division has expanded its green offerings to include historic buildings, hotels, restaurants, manufacturing facilities and commercial auto, according to the company.
