A 14-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department pleaded guilty to insurance fraud, resulting in a sentence of one year in jail.

Anthony Razo, 49, made his plea in court April 8 to the charges of insurance fraud and falsely reporting to authorities that assailants shot him outside of his home, when he actually wounded himself, the Los Angeles Times reported.

As part of a plea agreement, Razo admitted to fabricating a story that two young Latino males attacked him outside his home and shot him with his own department-issued handgun. The plea agreement also stipulated that Razo return $5,400 that fellows officers raised for him to help pay his medical bills, according to the report.

Razo also admitted that he set fire to his 2005 BMW and falsely claimed the vehicle was stolen in January, filing fraudulent claims against his auto and homeowners insurance policies. The report claims that the officer was experiencing financial problems at the times of the incidents.

Through the plea, the former officer avoided four felony counts, including arson, that could have resulted in a sentence of more than seven years in prison.
