Alleged skydiving lands insurance fraud charges for New York man
A Hudson Falls, N.Y. man who collected $83,000 in workers’ compensation benefits claiming a back injury prevented him from working was arrested after investigators allegedly caught him performing numerous activities, including skydiving.
Jacob H. Bancroft, 28, claimed he could not work due to back pain suffered as a press operator and collected lost wage and medical benefits from First Cardinal and Sun Life insurance dating back to 2007, according to the New York State Insurance Department.
Through an investigation, the department’s Frauds Bureau observed Bancroft engaging in physical activities including running a construction company, volunteer firefighting and obtained surveillance videos of him skydiving.
He was recently arrested on charges of insurance fraud, grand larceny, falsifying business records and workers’ compensation fraud. Bancroft was released on $20,000 bond pending a future hearing.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison, according to the department.
