A North Carolina woman was sentenced to two years in prison for her role in cheating Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield out of $12 million.
Kendra Huddleston, 42, a former aid to Lower Burrell, Pa., chiropractor Douglas Henderson, received the sentence after pleading guilty to one of the biggest fraud schemes in Western Pennsylvania, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
From 1996 to 2002, law enforcement officials said, Huddleston was part of a scheme with Henderson, submitting fake medical bills to Highmark for chiropractic services that were never performed.
She told U.S. District Judge Gary L. Lancaster that she learned about checks Henderson was writing back to patients for things like maintenance, advertising an cleaning, according to the report. The checks turned out to be kickbacks for allowing the practice to submit false bills in those patients’ names and Henderson invited Huddleston to be part of the scheme.
Huddleston faced as much as six-and-a-half years in prison, but received a significant reduction because she assisted the prosecution, according to the Post Gazette.
In December, Lancaster sentenced Henderson to four years in prison by Lancaster for his involvement in the scheme. He also cooperated with prosecutors, who secured convictions against 15 of his former patients.
