Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. is introducing green insurance for homeowners in Maryland.

homenewThe Novato, Calif.-based company said it is now offering the product to homeowners who own green homes or who want to upgrade their residences with green features following a loss using environmental safety and efficiency standards. If a home is destroyed, it can be rebuilt to green standards and certified as having Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) status.

Through the new coverage, homeowners are able to rebuild and replace with green alternatives, including Energy Star-rated appliances, non-toxic and low odor paints and carpeting and water-saving plumbing fixtures.

Homeowners whose residences are already green will be offered a five percent discount on this coverage, applied to the homeowner premium.

Maryland joins 35 other states approved for the product, including the District of Columbia, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Additionally, the Baltimore County Council provides tax credits of between 40% and 100% for new residential construction earning a minimum of LEED “Silver” certification. The tax credits span three years or up to $1 million in total incentives.

“We believe this is a trend-setting insurance solution for homeowners who are interested in the many benefits of ‘going green’ at home,” said Donald Soss, vice president of Fireman’s Fund Personal Insurance.
