Coventry HMO fined, ordered to submit records for MIA review
A Wilmington, Del.-based health insurance company was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and submit records to the Maryland Insurance Administration for a review of its policies.
Coventry Health Care of Delaware Inc., which provides health insurance coverage in Maryland and Delaware, was ordered to submit a database of everyone it denied coverage to between July 1, 2002, and January for further investigation.
The MIA imposed the fine and ordered the review in January after a woman accused the insurer of failing to provide consumer-specific information about the availability of coverage under the Maryland Health Insurance Plan when it denied her application for coverage. The MIA received a complaint that led to an initial investigation in June 2008, records show.
The MIA also ordered the HMO to bring its policies for denials of coverage into compliance with state law.
