A new online tool from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners is helping more than 14,000 members of the U.S. military learn more about a multi-state regulatory settlement that may affect them.

soldier-sleeveService members who purchased life insurance products from Waco, Texas-based American-Amicable Life Insurance Co. of Texas or its affiliates, Pioneer American Insurance Co. and Pioneer Security Life Insurance Co., are owed more than $2.3 million under the 2006 agreement, according to the NAIC.

The multi-state agreement was signed by 46 states, the District of Columbia and Guam for policies issued between Jan. 1, 2000, and July 28, 2006. Policyholders might be entitled to compensation and/or increased policy benefits in states including Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

A new tool on the NAIC web site lets military members determine their eligibility for compensation through a search engine.

NAIC President Roger Sevigny said that state regulators “are on the front line, protecting the service men and women who stand up for America’s safety.”

“This tool provides another important consumer service that helps identify and locate those who were targeted by inappropriate sales practices and are now owed compensation,” said Sevigny, who is also New Hampshire Insurance commissioner, in a statement.

The settlement agreement came following a 20-month investigation by the Texas and Georgia insurance departments, the U.S. Department of Justice and the SEC. The investigation came after allegations by state insurance regulators and federal agencies that American-Amicable and its subsidiaries violated insurance and consumer protection statutes in the sale and marketing of certain life insurance products to members of the U.S. military.
