A Baltimore pastor has confessed to plotting to kill a blind and disabled man to collect nearly $1 million in life insurance claims.

handcuffs2newKevin Jerome Pushia, 32, told police he persuaded Lemuel Wallace and “numerous” other mentally challenged individuals to list him as a beneficiary on insurance policies, according to the Baltimore Sun. Pushia served as a pastor at an East Baltimore church and was a former operations manager at the Arc of Baltimore, an agency that works with people with disabilities.

Wallace was found dead in the bathroom stall of a Baltimore park in February, shot several times in the head and back.

Baltimore police also teamed with South Carolina law enforcement officials to arrest James Omar Clea III, 31, who is charged with first-degree murder, suspected of being involved in hiring a hit man to kill Wallace, the Sun reported.

Following Wallace’s death, an agent for Globe Life Insurance contacted Baltimore police, indicating that Pushia was listed as Wallace’s brother on a $200,000 policy. Following further investigation by police, Pushia admitted that he had taken out as many as six insurance policies in Wallace’s name, worth nearly $1 million and had policies on other individuals, according to the report.

In January, Pushia resigned from his job with the Arc of Baltimore abruptly, responsible for a number of group homes, including the one where Wallace lived.
