A Bergen County, N.J., dentist will serve one year of probation after allowing a non-licensed employee to clean the teeth of patients and then deceptively billing Delta Dental for the services.
,Louisa Correa-Hunter, 43, was sentenced April 24 and must also pay a $350 criminal fine, according to Attorney General Anne Milgram’s office. Following her February guilty plea, Correa-Hunter paid $200,000 in restitution to the insurer and a $65,000 civil fine.
Correa-Hunter, the owner and operator of Sunrise Dental in Paramus, N.J., admitted that between Jan. 1, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2007, she allowed an employee, Adriana Manzano, to perform teeth cleanings even though she was not licensed to do so. The doctor then billed Delta Dental for those services, which were not reimbursable as they were not performed by a licensed person.
Manzano, 42, pleaded guilty in January to third-degree theft by deception, according to Milgram’s office.
