Black chambers of commerce in Maryland endorse universal health plan
Three of Maryland’s black chambers of commerce announced their support for a universal health care proposal for state residents.
Leaders of the Greater Baltimore Black Chamber of Commerce, the Black Chamber of Commerce of Anne Arundel County and the Prince George’s County Black Chamber of Commerce all endorsed the “Health Care for All” plan proposed by the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative, the Baltimore Sun reported.
The plan calls for a 2% payroll tax on businesses, seen as a detriment to the program by many business groups. In announcing their support, the chambers said the plan would lower overhead costs for small firms by creating a large insurance pool, according to the Sun.
Del. Barbara Robinson (D-Baltimore City), a board member of the Greater Baltimore Black Chamber of Commerce, and others urged the Maryland Chamber of Commerce to support the measure as well, according to the report.
The plan is expected to come before state legislators next year.
