Former Passaic, N.J. Councilman Jonathan Soto was sentenced to 75 months in federal prison for accepting $44,500 in bribes for public insurance contracts in three counties.

Soto, 33, was part of an FBI investigation that led to the indictments of 11 former New Jersey politicians, including Passaic’s former mayor, Sammy Rivera, and two assemblymen, according to The Newark Star-Ledger.

Soto was sentenced to serve a little over six years in prison and to pay a fine of $5,000 for his involvement in the scheme. He also must undergo treatment for drug use.

In September 2007, he was among 11 public officials and one private citizen arrested through the FBI’s “Operation Broken Boards,” sting, following bribes for insurance contracts in Atlantic, Essex and Passaic counties, the report said.

In a 2006 conversation taped by authorities, Soto told a witness that “the sky is the limit with Passaic,” and that he had friends in other municipalities and glad to be “part of the team” involved in the scheme, according to the Star-Ledger.

Soto perjured himself at trial in February, contradicting video and audio evidence presented by federal investigators, resulting in an obstruction charge against him.

He will surrender to the Federal Bureau of Prisons on June 18, but remains under electronic surveillance at his home. He will serve three years of probation, the report said, during which he may not hold public elective or appointed office.
