A former Pennsylvania state senator and insurance industry veteran was recently honored as an unsung hero by the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.

Harold F. Mowery Jr. of Camp Hill, Pa., was presented with the Scott D. Jackson VIP (Very Important Pennsylvanian) award at the organization’s recent annual convention in Gettysburg, Pa.

The award, named after the former executive vice president of the state association from 1994 until his death in 2006, is given annually to an unsung hero working outside of the spotlight. The VIP Award is for people who are dedicated to their local association and whose participation made that association better as a result of their efforts, according to NAIFA-Pennsylvania.

In 1957, Mowery joined NAIFA-Greater Harrisburg, three years after entering the insurance industry as an agent with Provident Mutual. He established Professional Insurance Services Inc. in 1966 and established Mowery Associates in 1990, where he continues to work.  He also has served as president of the Harrisburg General Agents and Managers Association and as president of the Harrisburg Estate Planning Council.

In 1976, Mowery was elected to represent the 87th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and served in the House for 14 years. In 1990, he was a candidate for lieutenant governor. He was elected in 1992 to represent the 31st Senatorial District in the Pennsylvania State Senate and served in the Senate until 2004.

He has served as a member of the Camp Hill School Board and has been active with the American Cancer Society, Boy Scouts of America, Holy Spirit Hospital and West Shore Chamber of Commerce as well.

NAIFA-Pennsylvania represents about 2,000 licensed professionals in 21 local associations, providing life, health and multi-line insurance and related financial services in the state.
