A 25-year claims representative who retired in 1978 and died last year left half of his estate to his former employer, State Auto, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.

money pileJack Boyle left the property-casualty firm $152,000, writing in his will that the money be given with no strings attached “in gratitude for my livelihood in their employ and good pension in retirement,” according to the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch. Boyle, who had no children, left the remainder of his estate to his family.

A company spokesman told the Dispatch that the donation came “out of the blue” and the insurer has never had such a gift in its 88-year history.

State Auto used the donation for charities through its nonprofit Paul R. Gingher Foundation and named its charitable employee matching program after Boyle.

State Auto writes business in 33 states, including Maryland and Pennsylvania, through approximately 3,400 independent agencies.
