New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine named Neil Jasey as interim commissioner for the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance, replacing former head Steven M. Goldman, who recently resigned.

Jasey, 61, joined Prudential in Newark, N.J. in 1975. He served in various management roles and was named vice president and deputy general counsel in 2001, according to published reports. Jasey retired from the insurer in 2004.

He is also the husband of Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (D-Essex).

Corzine said he is “excited” to appoint “such a talented individual as Neil Jasey to lead” the state’s department of banking and insurance.

“I am confident that Mr. Jasey’s experience and dedication to service will serve the department and all of New Jersey well,” the governor said in a statement.

Jasey will serve as interim commissioner until the New Jersey Senate reconvenes after their summer recess. Corzine can then nominate Jasey or someone else as the full-time commissioner. That appointment would require Senate approval.

“I am really pleased to have this opportunity for public service,” Jasey said in a statement.  “I appreciate the confidence Governor Corzine has shown in me by making this appointment. I’m honored to be invited into his cabinet and I am looking forward to joining my efforts with others in the Department of Banking and Insurance during these challenging and potentially transformational times.”
