National health insurer Aetna, fresh from a disappointing second quarter earnings report, appears ready to sell its pharmacy benefit management business.

RX-capsulesBankers at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse have been seeking a buyer, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, which cited people involved in the possible sale.

CVS Caremark Corp, Medco Health Solutions and Express Scripts, the PBMs biggest competitors, were among the list of companies that could have an interest in the business, the report said.

If it sells the business, it would not be the first PBM to sell this year. Express Scripts bought NextRx, Wellpoint Inc.’s pharmacy benefits business, for $4.68 billion in April.

Aetna officials did not comment on the report.
