Baltimore cop faces insurance fraud charge over ‘stolen’ vehicle

A Baltimore City police officer was indicted by a grand jury on charges of insurance fraud and attempted felony theft for allegedly claiming his vehicle was stolen when it was actually used to purchase another car.

Hikeem Crampton Sr., 30, of Rosedale, Md., faces a maximum of 30 years in prison and fines totaling $35,000, according to the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.

Authorities allege that from Oct. 4, 2008, through Dec. 17, 2008, Crampton fraudulently claimed his Cadillac Escalade had been stolen when it had actually been traded in towards the purchase of another vehicle.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Crampton graduated from the Baltimore Police Academy in 2001, requesting an assignment to his old neighborhood in West Baltimore.

A spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department told the Sun Crampton was suspended with pay when the department learned of the allegations.

Crampton was indicted following a joint investigation by the Regional Auto Theft Task Force, the Insurance Fraud Division, the Maryland Insurance Administration and the Office of the Attorney General.
