Million in losses from victims of Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme have been paid off by insurer American International Group under homeowners insurance policies that covered “fraud, embezzlement or forgery.”

The insurer, in the news frequently over the last year after taking nearly $180 billion in federal bailout funds, did not cover all claims. Claims were denied in cases where people had withdrawn more money than they invested, according to a New York Post report.

Hundreds of claims have been paid in connection with Madoff, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to running a Ponzi scheme that led to billions in losses for investors, some of whom were prominent figures, including athletes and actors.

Homeowners sought coverage for Madoff losses despite buying the coverage for identity theft or credit card fraud, the paper said.
