A Shreveport, La., insurance agent lost her license recently for collecting $1,324 in commissions on property-casualty policies for which she either collected partial or no payment, according to Louisiana state insurance regulators.
Tanya Mclain Weems, 38, was charged with misrepresentation and ordered to pay a $ 9,675 fine by the Louisiana Insurance Department. Her casualty, property and vehicle physical damage licenses, issued in November 1996, were revoked.
In July 2008, Weems allegedly wrote 30 insurance policies for individuals from whom she did not collect premiums, but caused the payments to be made from the agency account, amounting to $6,489. For 16 policies, she collected partial amounts of the required down payments, but caused the agency account to be debited for the full amount. The difference between the total payments drafted from the agency and actually collected from customers amounts to more than $1,154, authorities said.
In November 2008, she caused seven separate payments, totaling $1,427, to be made from the agency bank account to insurance companies in order to have policies reinstated or to prevent cancellation without collecting the premiums from the customers, authorities said.
She also was accused of twice using the agency bank account to pay for a customer’s overdraft fees without collecting the fees from the customer, officials said. The payments totaled $382.
