Scott Township man allegedly torched home night before auction day

A Scott Township, Pa., man was charged with insurance fraud and other charges after allegedly etting fire to his house the day before it was to be auctioned at a foreclosure sale.

Manfred John Lennartz allegedly torched his home about 1 a.m. the night before the auction. Citigroup Mortgage Loan Trust had started foreclosure proceedings on Lennartz’s home and his was one of 90 homes to be auctioned the next day, according to the Scranton Times.

“Any fire that occurs in this time fashion does raise red flags with investigators,” Corey Kolcharno, an assistant district attorney, told the newspaper.

Three witnesses claimed to have seen a car matching the description of Lennartz’s black Chrysler Sebring convertible leave his home at about the time of the fire, according to the Times.

Lennartz also was the sole beneficiary of the $223,000 insurance policy on his home, according to investigators.

Lennartz was charged with two counts of arson endangering property and single counts of arson endangering persons, insurance fraud, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. Bail was set at $25,000.
