Former Washington state insurance agent defrauds friend
A former insurance agent from Pasco, Wash., was charged with first-degree theft for allegedly using a friend’s insurance premium payment to pay for off her husband’s car.
Kelly Anne Winebarger, 40, was an agent for Steve Shoemaker Insurance and needed to collect an insurnce premium payment from her friend – who she met in April — by telling the woman the money was for an insurance premium payment, according to the Tri-City Herald in Kennewick, Wash. Winebarger allegedly changed the check, written to the insurance company, so that it was payable to her for $6,900.
With the money, she paid $2,200 to Steve Shoemaker Insurance so that her friend’s premium wouldn’t lapse, authorities told the newspaper. She moved the rest of the money into her checking account so she could pay off her husband’s car, authorities say.
Winebarger’s friend was alerted to the alleged theft when she received a letter from the agency thanking her for her $2,216.70 payment, which Winebarger paid by phone using her friend’s checking account information, according to the Herald. The friend checked the amount of the check and realized it had been changed to $6,900, authorities said.
Winebarger faces trial in Benton County Superior Court Nov. 2 for charges, including the allegation that her actions violated a position of trust. She denies the allegations.
