Survey: College-age students, parents shun renter’s insurance
College-age adults are gatherers, but not protectors of those belongings, a new survey commissioned by Allstate Insurance finds.
The survey of Wisconsin college-age students indicates that protection of their accumulated assets through renter’s insurance is not important to them or the parents who support them.
A total of 53% of respondents reported belongings worth more than $10,000 and 88% reported they could only afford to replace, at best, some of their things.
Slightly more than half of respondents (56%) had no insurance protection and 60% said it wasn’t likely they would purchase renters insurance anytime soon, according to the survey.
Nearly one-third of survey participants (27%) said they spent between $150 and $200 on clothes a month, the same cost as renter’s insurance for a year, according to Allstate Insurance.
“The data suggests to me that people aren’t thinking past the purchase,” said London Bradley of Allstate in a statement. “It’s a shame because renters insurance is one of the smartest investments people in this situation can make and so few take advantage of it.”
