Former Maryland correctional officer gets probation for felony fraud
A former correctional officer avoided time behind bars herself after a circuit court judge sentenced her to two years of supervised probation for felony insurance fraud.
LaShawn Clark-Grisson pleaded guilty to the charge after she filed false claims with TransAmerica Life Insurance Co., where she had a disability insurance policy, according to the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.
An investigation revealed that between May 22, 2007, and July 22, 2008, Clark-Grisson submitted three false claims to the insurer and a variety of false documents to support the claims for lost wages and medical reimbursement. She received a total of $3,660 from TransAmerica.
The insurance company discovered the fraud when it attempted to verify her lost wages with her former employer, the Maryland Department of Corrections. Clark-Grisson’s employment with the prison system was terminated and she repaid the money to TransAmerica, officials said.
