Health reform advocates stage protest at insurers’ offices
A group of about a dozen health care reform supporters calling for insurance companies to end “bad health insurance industry practices” staged a protest Tuesday (Sept. 22) in front of the Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania headquarters in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
The protest, organized by Health Care for America Now members, was part of a nationwide effort to push for health care reform that featured visits to the offices of a number of large insurance companies, according to the Times-Leader newspaper. Stops were also planned at Williamsport, Pa., and CIGNA’s offices in Philadelphia, organizers told the newspaper.
As employees entered the building on North Main Street in the morning, protesters showed printed and handmade signs and called out, according to the report.
Members want Blue Cross and other health insurers to sign a pledge to end bad health insurance industry practices, including denials for pre-existing conditions, arbitrary caps on medical care payments and funding of lobbying efforts opposed to the reforms.
The group represented members of MoveOn.org, as well as local religious, labor and community groups, the newspaper said.
