Maryland woman avoids prison for inflated homeowners claim

A Maryland Circuit Court judge spared a Beltsville, Md., woman of prison time after she submitted a $172,000 fraudulent claim to State Farm following the burglary of her home.

gavelPatricia Strong, 49, received a three-year suspended sentence and one year of supervised probation from a Prince George’s County Circuit Court judge after being convicted of one felony count of insurance fraud, according to the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.

A joint investigation by the attorney general’s office and the Insurance Fraud Division of the Maryland Insurance Administration found that Strong’s home was burglarized between July 27, 2008, and Aug. 1, 2008.

On Aug. 8, 2008, Strong submitted a document to State Farm, claiming lost property worth $172,000.

Strong supplemented that claim with a phone conversation with a State Farm representative 12 days later. When confronted again on Nov. 7, 2008, she admitted the claim was falsified and withdrew it, according to officials.
