Florida agent accused of stealing $14 million in premium scheme
Jose V. Peris of Miami, Fla., was arrested on charges of theft from a premium finance company in September. On Oct. 8, he was put in handcuffs again, this time for allegedly stealing $14 million by submitting thousands of fake premium finance contracts for fictitious policyholders.
Peris, 52, the owner and president of Insurance Force Corp, which does business as FED USA Insurance Agency, submitted more than 3,800 fraudulent premium finance contracts to numerous premium finance companies, according to the Florida Division of Insurance Fraud. More than $7 million remains unrecovered, according to the division, with Peris facing multiple counts of first-degree organized scheme to defraud.
If convicted on all charges, including those leading to his September arrest, Peris faces up to 60 years in prison.
Florida’s Department of Financial Services, which oversees the fraud division, also issued an emergency order to suspend Peris’ licenses to do business in the state.
An investigation into Peris and his agency began after allegations that he lied about premium financing contracts for fictitious Citizens Property Insurance Corp. policies. Information was provided to investigators by ABCO Premium Finance that Peris was creating fake contracts, and it was later discovered that other premium finance companies were also victimized.
“This agent lined his own pocket by taking advantage of the trust that was placed in him, and he will be held accountable for all of his actions,” said Florida CFO Alex Sink, head of the financial services department, in a statement.
