A Norfolk, Va., woman’s criminal past and use of minors in staging car accidents resulted in a heavier prison term for fraudulently claiming thousands of dollars in insurance money.

Teresa R. Gallop, 41, also known as Teresa R. Vick, was sentenced to seven years in prison and must pay restitution of $49,111 to the insurance companies that sustained losses, according to the Newport News Daily Press. In March, Gallop was convicted of health care fraud and making false statements regarding health care matters.

Prosecutors in the case also noted that Gallop staged the accidents by having her teenage son and a friend intentionally collide vehicles. Afterward, the report said, she would climb into one of the vehicles with minor children, including her younger sons and nephews, who would then claim injuries from the “accident.”

While sentencing guidelines for the charges usually call for 63 months to 78 months in prison, prosecutors in the case sought a longer term due in part to Gallops’s criminal history, the report said. Her criminal record includes 60 prior felony convictions and a guilty plea to manslaughter in 1988 for the shooting death of the father of two of her sons.

Gallop is alleged to have faked injuries and alter medical bills in order to collect money from insurance companies.
