Syracuse health carrier employee charged with lying to gain benefits
An Upstate New York man could face seven years in prison if convicted of lying to his employer – a health insurance company – about the relationship with a woman and her child.
Keoliver R. McCall, 35, of Syracuse, N.Y., is accused of falsely claiming he was wed to the woman and fathered her child to obtain $9,200 in health care benefits from Excellus Health Plan for the two of them, according to the New York State Insurance Department. Excellus does business as Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield in New York.
McCall was unmarried with no dependents and was employed by Excellus as a customer service representative at the time he obtained the insurance.
Excellus paid medical and dental claims for the two ineligible dependents under a family benefits plan, according to the department.
An investigation by the department’s frauds bureau led to an arrest by New York State Police and charges of third-degree grand larceny and falsifying business records against McCall.
