No cake for New Jersey man arrested for insurance fraud on birthday

A New Jersey man got an unexpected surprise on his birthday: an arrest for allegedly filing fraudulent claims with an insurance company and pocketing the proceeds.

handcuffs2newVictor H. Fakondo, who turned 53 on Oct. 19, was arrested the same day and accused of pocketing $237,000 from the scheme, according to Union County (N.J.) Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.

Romankow’s office said that Fakondo, of Piscataway, N.J., worked part-time at Margarita Pharmacy in Elizabeth where investigators discovered he submitted at least 290 false claims to health care provider MedCo.

Investigators say Fakondo was employed at the pharmacy between June 2008 and August as a pharmacist. In September, MedCo called the pharmacy to inquire about a claim and the business’ owner had no record of it in his computer system.

After running an audit of Fakondo’s transactions, the owner found “pages and pages of fraudulent invoices,” according to prosecutors. The pharmacy never actually received prescription drugs from any of the invoices.

Some of the false claims were made out in the names of Fakondo’s wife and children, according to Romankow’s office, and it is currently unclear what the part-time pharmacist did with the money.

Fakondo faces charges of second-degree insurance fraud, second-degree theft by deception and third-degree forgery.
