Fake flood claim nets wave of trouble for New York man

A Tioga County, N.Y., man could be sentenced to up to four years in prison for allegedly filing a $5,300 fraudulent insurance claim after a washing machine hose broke and flooded  his basement.

Dennis Maley, 53, of Apalachin, N.Y., was recently arrested and accused of submitting a fraudulent claim to Allstate Insurance Co, according to the New York State Insurance Department.

A frauds bureau investigator with the department said three of the four items listed on Maley’s claim – a television stand and sound system parts – were actually owned by another individual and were never damaged by water.  A fourth item in the claim, a couch, was not in the basement when it flooded, the investigator said.

Maley faces a fourth-degree insurance fraud charge and first-degree count of falsifying business records.
