Former New Jersey pharmacist indicted for insurance fraud
A grand jury in Sussex County, N.J., has handed up an indictment containing more than 60 charges against a former pharmacy owner.
Desmond “Des” Fitzgerald, of Belvidere, N.J. faces numerous charges, including 42 counts of second- and third-degree health care claims fraud, and 21 counts of third-degree insurance fraud, according to the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Fitzgerald was the owner of the Sparta Pharmacy in Sparta, N.J., for more than 50 years before it closed in July, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. He was arrested in December following a nine-month investigation that began when a customer found that her insurer was billed for prescriptions that she never received, according to the paper.
Sparta police allege that phony claims were made to UnitedHealthcare in an amount less than $1,000.
Fitzgerald, who has denied the charges against him, served a pair of three-year terms as a Belvidere councilman and acted as police commissioner during both of those terms, according to the Star-Ledger.
