An Ulster County, N.Y., man collecting disability benefits for an alleged back injury was caught on tape by fraud investigators driving, power washing and repairing vehicles and fishing.

Matthew W. Robbins, 48, of Kerhonkson, N.Y., was arrested Nov. 13 following an investigation by the New York State Insurance Department’s Frauds Bureau and the New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF).

According to the agencies, Robbins claimed to have strained his back when picking up a water pump while working at a day camp. He collected $35,000 in disability benefits from NYSIF for nearly 10 years and testified at two workers’ compensation hearings that the injury let him totally disabled and unable to work.

However, fraud investigators recorded videotape of Robbins in various activities, including fishing in a running stream waist deep in water.

Robbins, facing charges of insurance fraud, committing fraudulent practices and workers’ compensation fraud, faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
