Two Maryland women suing employer, State Farm claiming harassment

Two female employees of a Randallstown, Md., insurance agency are suing their employer and State Farm, seeking $4 million in punitive damages, claiming sexual harassment, insults and a hostile work environment.

scalesbalanceKristi Mitchell and Veronica Cobb are suing the owner of the agency, Obie Sorrell, and Bloomington, Ill.-based State Farm Annuity and Life Insurance Co., according to the Baltimore Sun. Since February 2002, Mitchell has served as an office manager and Cobb was hired in May as a customer service manager.

The suit, filed in Baltimore County Circuit Court, alleges that Sorrell repeatedly referred to Cobb as a “prostitute” and a “whore,” accusing her of sleeping with clients. When Cobb asked Sorrell to stop the insults, the owner allegedly told her “this is my shop” and “my name is on the sign” and if she did not like the treatment, she could leave, the Sun reported.

Sorrell also allegedly rubbed the shoulders and backs of Cobb and Mitchell without their consent and when the pair complained to State Farm officials, nothing was done. The pair did get a meeting with a State Farm field executive Nov. 17, according to the Sun, who apologized for not addressing the problem but “kept asking if plaintiffs were going to sue State Farm or just defendant Sorrell,” court documents detailed.

Neither Sorrell nor State Farm responded to the Sun’s request for comments on the lawsuit.
