Baltimore cop spared prison with insurance fraud plea deal
A Baltimore City police officer avoided prison time, but will serve 100 hours of community service through a plea agreement on insurance fraud charges.
Hikeem D. Crampton Sr., 30, of Rosedale, Md., received a suspended two-year prison sentence, two years of supervised probation and must complete the community service requirement, according to the Frederick News Post. The case was handled in Frederick County because Crampton’s insurance agency is located there.
Crampton pleaded guilty to attempted felony theft Nov. 23, three months after a Frederick County grand jury indicted him on allegations that a Cadillac Escalade he claimed was stolen was actually traded in for another vehicle, the newspaper said, citing court records.
After trading in the Escalade, Crampton canceled his insurance and turned in the title, according to the state’s attorney general’s office. Crampton obtained a duplicate title, then filed an insurance claim with a Frederick, Md., insurance agency, stating that the dealership where he traded in the vehicle had actually stolen it.
Crampton’s insurance agency did not pay the claim.
Crampton remains on suspension from the Baltimore City Police Department, the News-Post reported, pending a departmental hearing this week.
