Mississippi trio convicted of staging accident for fraudulent claim

Three Mississippi residents will spend time in state prison for staging an auto accident in Yazoo County order to fraudulently collect money from their insurance company.

The trio entered guilty pleas Dec. 2 in a Mississippi circuit court, according to the state’s attorney general, Jim Hood.

Kevin Jones, of Lexington, Miss., pleaded to a single count of attempted insurance fraud and was sentenced to two years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Jones’ sentence will run consecutive to a five-year sentence he is already serving in Holmes County. Jones also must pay $1,000 to the state’s crime victims compensation fund and reimburse all investigative costs.

Melissa Gates, 34, of Yazoo City, Miss., pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted insurance fraud, receiving a six-year prison sentence with three years suspended.

Kildrick Deering, 24, of Lexington, Miss., pleaded guilty to a pair of attempted insurance fraud counts. He was sentenced to six years in prison with three years suspended.

Following their incarceration, Jones will serve one year of post release supervision while Gates and Deering will serve one year of house arrest and two years of supervised probation. Gates and Deering also must each pay $273.50 in court costs.
