A New York teenager who changed her insurance policy after hitting a deer with her car faces a charge of third-degree insurance fraud and could be sentenced to seven years in prison.
Megan Reed, 19, of Meridale, N.Y., was arrested following an investigation by the New York State Insurance Department’s Frauds Bureau, New York State Police and Progressive Insurance Co.
Investigators allege that Reed’s collision with the deer occurred prior to the date she changed her insurance to include collision and comprehensive coverage. After changing her policy, she filed the claim for $3,100, which Progressive declined to pay, according to investigators.
