Allegheny Co. port authority sees ups and downs of liability claims

The Port Authority of Allegheny County, Pa., paid out more than $3 million for employees, passengers and other people hurt in accidents or on the job in the fiscal year, ending June 30.

report-generic-graphDuring the same fiscal year, the authority saw its public liability – including legal settlements, and property damage claims – drop by $100,000, to $1.2 million, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Claims for workers’ compensation, claims for bodily injuries and medical benefits for passengers without insurance who were injured all increased in fiscal 2009, Port Authority Claims Director Todd Stoker told the newspaper.

The authority operates a fleet of 861 buses, 83 light-rail vehicles and 48 mini-buses to persons traveling within a 775 square-mile area, including Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.
