Kentucky mayor indicted on several charges, including insurance fraud
The mayor of Mount Vernon, Ky., is free on bond but still faces seven charges following a grand jury indictment.
A Rockcastle County grand jury indicted Clarice Kirby Dec. 11, on two counts of abusing her public trust, one count of obtaining money or property over $10,000, one count of official misconduct, one count of fraudulent insurance acts, one count of bribery of a public servant and one count of official misconduct, according to the Richmond (Ky.) Register and CNHI News.
Former city employees Henry Stewart and John Parson also were arrested and charged in connection with the fraudulent insurance charges. Kentucky State Police alleged the three tore down an old burnt house and then submitted the bill to an insurance company, according to published reports.
Other alleged misconduct by Kirby include using female inmates from the Rockcastle County detention center for labor at both city hall and work in other counties, where the mayor provided them with alcohol.
Kirby is due back in court for a formal arraignment Dec. 17.
