Maryland woman to pay $40,000 obtained from fraudulent insurance claim
A Prince George’s County Circuit Court has ordered a Clinton, Md., woman to repay $40,000 it says she fraudulently obtained from her insurance company.
Melody Ann Silver, 48, pleaded not guilty Dec. 1 to one count of felony theft, according to the Prince George’s County Gazette. The judge sentenced Silver to five years of probation and the repayment order.
Silver suffered a back injury in 1999 while working for User Technology Associates in Alexandria, Va., which was eventually acquired by BAE Systems Inc. North America, according to the report.
Between 1999 and 2005, the Maryland Attorney General’s Office alleged Silver regularly filed long-term disability benefits claims with Assurant Employee Benefits Co. Her paperwork claimed she was no longer working, even though she continued to work for User Technology Associates from home, earning an annual salary between $60,000 and $70,000, the office said.
The state alleged that Silver gained about $40,000 through her fraudulent claims.
