Eighth defendant in North Carolina staged accident ring sentenced
The eighth and final defendant in an auto insurance fraud ring that netted more than $100,000 in phony claims payments from staged accidents was sentenced in North Carolina.
Cory Timothy Jett, 35, of Greenville, N.C., pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to obtain property by false pretense, according to the North Carolina Department of Insurance. Jett received suspended jail time, 24 months parole and must pay nearly $2,000 in restitution to Progressive Insurance, according to the insurance department.
An investigation found that the eight defendants in the case allegedly posed as drivers and passengers in salvage cars. The alleged ringleader in the fraud, Rayon Lamont Artis, 32, of Greenville, often bought the cars out of state.
The defendants submitted phony medical and vehicle damage insurance claims following a staged accident and the ring was broken up once GMAC Insurance tipped off the insurance department.
Artis was previously sentenced to 32 to 36 months in prison and 48 months of probation after a guilty plea to multiple counts of obtaining property by false pretense, attempting to obtain property by false pretense and conspiracy to obtain property by false pretense.
Six other defendants in the case have pleaded guilty and received jail time, probation or restitution orders.
