California agent sentenced to prison for Medicare Advantage scam

A Canyon County, Calif., insurance agent will spend two years in prison after stealing the identity of a senior citizen and forging the victim’s name on a Medicare Advantage plan enrollment form to obtain a commission.

Janet Gail Wroe, 49, formerly a holder of fire and casualty and life insurance broker-agent licenses, was facing a maximum of four years in prison, according to the California Department of Insurance.

A department investigation found that on July 3, 2007, Wroe tried to enroll a Hawthorne, Calif., senior citizen into a Medicare Advantage plan, but the victim declined. Wroe then obtained the victim’s personal information, completed the form and forged the senior citizen’s signature.

Wroe then submitted the completed application to another agent, who submitted it to an insurance company. Wroe subsequently obtained a commission on the policy.

In September, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed charges of forgery and identity theft against Wroe.

The California Department of Insurance revoked her license on June 22, 2008, on unrelated charges.
