Pa. chiropractor pleads guilty to defrauding health benefit program
A Moosic, Pa., chiropractor pleaded guilty in federal court to a felony charge of making false statements involving a health care benefit program.
Stephen Paranich, 41, faces a maximum of five years imprisonment, a fine of $250,000 and a maximum term of three years supervised release, according to the U.S. Department of Justice Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Authorities claimed that Paranich operated as a chiropractor, maintaining an office also staffed by an orthopedic surgeon and physical therapist. He submitted claims using both the surgeon’s and the therapist’s provider numbers when they were out of the office, records show.
Upon his arrest in February, authorities said he cheated Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania out of more than $39,000 through overbilling and filing fraudulent claims.
No sentencing date was given by the Department of Justice.
