N.Y. couple allegedly cashed $13,000 in dead relative’s benefit checks
A Saratoga County, N.Y., man and his wife are charged with third-degree grand larceny after cashing workers’ compensation checks meant for the man’s deceased father.
Geoffrey Gabel, 40, and Kelly Gabel, 38, both of Mechanicville, N.Y., were arrested following an investigation by the New York State Insurance Department’s Frauds Bureau.
The Gabels are accused of cashing checks of more than $13,000 sent to Geoffrey Gabel’s father after his death in September 2008. A routine check by workers’ compensation insurer Crum & Forster Indemnity Co. revealed that Gabel’s father had died, touching off the state’s investigation, authorities said.
Geoffrey and Kelly Gabel could receive up to seven years in prison, if convicted.
